Anna Steinitz (née Abrahamsohn) (15 July 1853 – 30 November 1877)

Married to Max Steinitz, Merchant (Kaufmann)
Died in Görlitz, Silesia, Prussia

Anna Abrahamsohn was born on 15 July 1853, though her exact place of birth remains unknown. By the 1870s she was living in Görlitz, where she married the merchant Max Steinitz, an established member of the city’s growing Jewish community. The Steinitz family lived at Obermarkt 24, a location that placed them among the active circle of Jewish tradesmen and civic figures who helped shape Görlitz’s economic and communal life during this period.

Anna and Max had three children together:

  • Robert Steinitz, born 1874,
  • Helene Steinitz, born 1876, and
  • Anna Steinitz, born 30 November 1877.

Shortly after the birth of her youngest child, Anna died on 30 November 1877, at only 24 years and 5 months old. Her death is recorded in the registers of the Jewish Community of Görlitz, noting her burial on 3 December 1877 in the Görlitz Jewish Cemetery.

Anna’s brief life coincided with a period of renewal and growth for Jewish life in Görlitz. As the young wife of a respected merchant and community representative, she was part of the first generation of Jewish women to live openly in the city after centuries of exclusion. Her untimely death marked a deep loss for her family and for the small but flourishing community to which she belonged.

Anna is buried in the Jewish Cemetery of Görlitz, where her grave remains among the earliest from the restored 19th-century congregation.
