Ida Kämpf (1855–1873)

Ida Kämpf was born in 1855 in Görlitz, the daughter of Elias Eduard Kämpf and his second wife, Friederike Opet Kämpf. Her father served the Görlitz Jewish community as Kantor, Religionslehrer und Schächter — the cantor, religious instructor, and ritual slaughterer — and was one of the first spiritual leaders of the city’s newly reestablished Jewish congregation.

Ida grew up in a home deeply rooted in faith, music, and education. She belonged to the first generation of Jewish children to be born and raised entirely within the reborn Görlitz community, which had only been reestablished in the late 1840s after centuries of exclusion.

Tragically, Ida’s life was brief. She died in 1873, at just 18½ years old. Though little is known about the circumstances of her death, community records note the deep mourning felt by her family — one that had already endured the loss of several children.

Ida Kämpf is buried in the Görlitz Jewish Cemetery, alongside her parents and siblings. Her grave, like theirs, stands as a quiet testament to the early Jewish families whose faith and perseverance built the foundation of Jewish life in Görlitz.
