Dr. Julius Höniger (April 1, 1851 – October 31, 1920)

Lawyer, Notary, and Jewish Community Leader in Görlitz

Dr. Julius Höniger, honored with the title Justizrat, was born on April 1, 1851, in Rybnik, Upper Silesia. In the early 1880s, he settled in Görlitz, where he built a distinguished career as a lawyer and notary. Known for his integrity, fairness, and civic-mindedness, Höniger became one of Görlitz’s most respected Jewish professionals and a leading figure in the city’s communal life.

He served for many years as chairman of the Repräsentanten-Kollegium, the elected governing board of the Görlitz Jewish congregation, dedicating his energy and expertise to strengthening religious and cultural institutions. Höniger was also active in the Viktoria Loge of B’nai B’rith, where he promoted education, philanthropy, and social welfare, and he served as local chairman of the Centralverein deutscher Staatsbürger jüdischen Glaubens (Central Association of German Citizens of Jewish Faith), advocating for Jewish civic equality and inclusion within German society.

With his wife, Zerline Höniger (née Nadelmann), he raised four children: Eugen, Georg, Hedwig, and Emmy. The daughters, Hedwig and Emmy, died young and are buried in the Görlitz Jewish cemetery. Their son Dr. Eugen Höniger (1880–1920) pursued an academic career and taught in Germany and Sweden, where he died at the age of forty in Katrineholm. The younger son, Dr. Georg Höniger (1885–1966), also became a lawyer. Following his imprisonment in Buchenwald concentration camp, he managed to escape Nazi Germany, finding refuge first in England and later in the United States, where he rebuilt his life in exile.

Dr. Julius Höniger died in Görlitz on October 31, 1920, and was buried there on November 3. His life embodied the ideals of civic responsibility, Jewish commitment, and intellectual engagement—values that defined the generation of German-Jewish professionals to which he belonged.
